Celebrate one of the most dramatic stories in British motorsport history with the RetroClassic™ BABS Land Speed Record Car T-Shirt. Created in official collaboration with the trust, this striking design features the legendary BABS, the car that made history on the sands of Wales.
In April 1926, driven by J.G. Parry-Thomas, BABS achieved a groundbreaking world land speed record of 171.02 mph at Pendine Sands, becoming the first car to break the 170 mph barrier. Powered by a massive 27-litre Liberty aero-engine producing over 500hp, BABS was a true engineering marvel of its time.
Originally known as the “Higham Special” or “Chitty Bang Bang 4”, the car was purchased by Parry-Thomas in his pursuit to challenge speed records. Tragically, in 1927, during another record attempt, the car crashed at high speed, resulting in his death. In a unique chapter of motoring history, BABS was buried in the sands before being recovered and painstakingly restored in 1969 by Owen Wyn Owen.
